Nestling in a valley in the picturesque Biggarsberg lies Dundee, a town of learning at the geographical heart of Northern Natal. It is surrounded by mountains, "lndumeni" (where the thunder rolls), "Mpati" (the place of good waters) and "Talana" (the shelf where precious items are kept), the town is a springboard to some of the most fascinating drives one can make in KwaZulu Natal. Proclaimed as a town by pioneering Scottish settlers in 1882. Peter Smith, a coal miner from Dundee in Scotland, was the co-founder of the village and he named it after his hometown.The Blood River Memorial & Ncome Memorial Museum - Stand as ghosts from a tragically violent past. The 64 great bronze oxwagons mark the battlesite of Blood River Battle which happened on 16 December 1838. The Ncome Memorial Museum, opened in 1996, presents a positive re-interpretation of the battle and of Zulu cultere in general.The Mahyeno Mission - A Luthern station used as a hospital during the battle of Talana and the Maria Ratschitz Mission - A beautiful trappist mission standing intact at the base of the Hlatikulu Mountain are also found near Dundee. The MOTH Museum, in the Isandlwana shellhole, houses an excellent ciollection of war memorabilia.Smith's Cottage was used as a British military hospital during the Battle of Talana and the Talana Museum details the history behind the battle and the war itself.
