Indigo Bay is an exquisite island resort, situated on the idyllic and pristine Bazaruto Island. It offers visitors the quintessential Indian Ocean island holiday, as well as a gateway to the unspoilt beauty of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
All chalets and main living areas at Indigo Bay Island Resort Hotel are constructed of natural materials like reed, thatch and wood to blend harmoniously with the perfect surroundings. The luxury is understated, yet elegant and the emphasis is on making the most of the superb location on the golden shores of Bazaruto Island. Indigo Bay specialises in seafood barbeques, themed dinners and local Mozambican Portuguese cuisine, which is served in the restaurant with its breathtaking views of this Indian Ocean island resort.
The whole Bazaruto Archipelago is an ecological gem that has been granted National Park status. It falls into the Eastern African Marine eco-region, which stretches over a 4 600km coastline, from South Africa to Somalia. Three of the islands were given formal protection in 1971 and designated a national park. Environmental groups kept up the pressure until government recently gazetted an extension to the park, incorporating the remaining islands and their surrounding waters.
Most of the local Bazaruto population are subsistence fishermen who can be seen to go out on the water early in the morning. Like Mozambicans on the mainland, the local people are a mixture of African, Arab and Portuguese descent. This is reflected in the interesting cuisine that can be sampled in the restaurants. Various spices and flavours combine well and complement the fresh seafood like prawns, line fish, crayfish, calamari and crabs.
